Clinic Lab Tech I & II

Reports To:            Clinic Diagnostic Services Manager

Closing Date:          Open Until Filled

Hours:                      Part-time (40 hours per 2 week pay period) - Mon-Fri (8am-1pm).  Possibility of rotating to another site on occasion to fill in, if needed.  Number of days per week varies depending on the number of providers scheduled.  MLT required.

SUMMARY

Responsible for the collection, processing and testing of specimens.  This job must be performed with strict adherence to the quality control and quality assurance policies of this facility in order to provide the patients and providers with the most accurate and timely test results possible. Adherence to OSHA, COLA, and CLIA (through Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, formerly known as HCFA) requirements is mandatory. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Handles high work volumes while maintaining the highest quality testing by careful adherence to department policies/procedure, OSHA, COLA, CLIA regulations to assure that patient care is done appropriately.

Collects specimens following collection procedure.  Corrects processing of specimens in a timely manner.

Performs tests authorized by the clinic lab director and follow all procedures for each test performed.  Records and reports each test following laboratory policy.  May perform moderate or high complexity testing with or without phlebotomy (see minimum requirements for qualifications based on menu and complexity).

Performs and documents all needed instrument maintenance.  Performs and documents all Quality Control on each test system before patients are tested. Follows established procedures when a test system is not within previously defined acceptable levels of performance.  Identifies and documents problems which may adversely affect test performance or reporting of results and immediately correct or notify lab supervisor.

Participates in the Quality Assurance Plan of the lab by documenting all problems and issues that could affect the quality of patient testing or patient/provider service.  Follow up on all problems and notify lab supervisor.

The position of CLT/CM/CA is not able to perform CBC manual differentials and wet preps, as well as UA micros upon approval of T.C. only.  No hematology instrumentation work.

Demonstrates customer service skills in order to positively impact the experience of care for our patients, external customers and internal service partners. 

Maintains educational status in regards to safety, fire, blood and body substances education as required by the Joint Commission.

Performs related work as required.

Considers age related factors in care, treatment, education and evaluation of patients, ranging from neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults and geriatrics.  Applies knowledge of age-related factors appropriately in accordance with professional standards and departmental policies and procedures.

Supports the policies and procedures of the organization and the standards of the Joint Commission as required for full accreditation.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High School Graduate or equivalent.  The complexity of the lab as a waived, moderate, or highly complex lab is dictated by the laboratory’s test menu and the classification of those tests by HCFA. The laboratory’s CLIA license will indicate the complexity of testing at the site.  In general, MLTs are better able to train quickly in the laboratory and meet the laboratory’s competency requirements in a speedy manner. The two years of certified laboratory education prepares the MLT to work independently.  Understanding of CLIA ’88 (COLA/HCFA certification). Communication skills to effectively communicate with patients, providers, and staff.
