Mid-Level Practitioner (NP/PA)

Department:           Emergency Department

Reports To:            Chief Operating Officer

Hours:                      Full or Part time position available.  11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. with rotating weekends.  Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant Education/Licensure required.  Emergency Services experience required.

SUMMARY

The Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant is an Affiliate Medical Staff member possessing advanced knowledge and clinical skills to provide direct and indirect emergency medical services in collaboration with the Emergency Department Physician.  These services are provided for all types of acute and chronic illnesses or injuries of patients of all ages.  These mid-level providers complete the Medical Screening Examination on a select population of patients that present to the Emergency Department for non-emergent care.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Provides general medical care and treatment under direction of physician by obtaining and documenting medical history and performing physical examination for non-emergent patients.

Orders, interprets and evaluates diagnostic tests such as x-rays, lab work and EKGs to identify and assess patient’s clinical problems and health care needs.

Formulates correct diagnosis and prognosis and implements discharge plan.

Prescribes or recommends medications or other forms of treatment such as physical or inhalation therapy based upon patient history, physical examination and findings.

Performs procedures such as suturing and splinting.

Demonstrates professional behavior by being self-directed in his/her work.  Complies with personnel and departmental policies.  Supports and participates in quality improvement activities.

Works actively with others to get the job done.  Consistently exhibits courteous behaviors/actions.

Listens to, understands and appropriately responds to customer needs.  Meets the needs of all customer groups and improves overall customer satisfaction.

Selects education from given guidelines; completes mandated education; schedule time for participation; documents attendance.  Maintains current licensure and certifications.  Attends and participates in required departmental meetings and reads minutes when unable to attend.

Addresses issues in a courteous and respectful manner.  Maintains the same standard for all patients/residents/families and co-workers.  Supports co-workers and patients/residents in a positive manner.

Follows safety practices.  Identifies problems and works to resolve safety issues as they occur and in accordance with policy:  asking for assistance when necessary.  Helps and teaches others when asked.

Supports quality standards and programs to assure safe, effective, efficient patient care and compliance with local, State, federal regulatory agencies and standards of Joint Commission.

Considers age-related factors when dealing with patients ranging from neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults and geriatrics.  Applies knowledge of age-related factors appropriately in accordance with professional standards and departmental policies and procedures.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Manages employees, supervisors, and managers in each of the departments aforementioned.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.  Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Degree from an approved program for Registered Nurse Advanced Practice or Physician Assistant Program.  Previous emergency, urgent care or family practice experience.
